The Experience

What to Expect

You are positioned on your side with bolstering and cushions rather than face down, which keeps the pressure off your back and bump. Work is gentle and focused on the places pregnancy tends to settle - lower back, hips, shoulders, legs and feet. Your therapist checks in on comfort and positioning as they go, and the whole appointment is paced to let you change position whenever you need to.

Who it suits

  • Second and third trimester, once your physician has cleared massage
  • Lower back, hip and leg aches that come with carrying extra weight
  • Swollen, tired feet and ankles
  • Trouble getting comfortable enough to sleep

Who should skip it

  • You are in your first trimester - we ask you to wait
  • Your pregnancy has been classed as high risk, or you have pre-eclampsia, a blood-clotting condition or similar
  • You have not yet spoken to your physician or midwife about massage

If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or managing a medical condition, please check with your physician first and tell your therapist when you arrive.

Good to Know

Common Questions

Is prenatal massage safe?

For most healthy pregnancies in the second and third trimester it is widely considered safe, and we ask every guest to check with their physician or midwife first. We do not offer massage during the first trimester. Tell your therapist how far along you are and anything your provider has advised.

Will I be lying on my stomach?

No. You are positioned on your side with cushions and bolsters supporting your back, bump and legs. It is a comfortable, well-supported position that keeps weight off your abdomen, and your therapist can adjust the setup at any point during the appointment.

When in pregnancy should I book?

Most guests come through the second and third trimester, when the aches of carrying extra weight have settled in. Many book every few weeks through the later months. Your physician is the right person to advise on timing for your particular pregnancy.

What if I am uncomfortable during the massage?

Say so straight away. Comfort shifts quickly in pregnancy and what worked ten minutes ago may not now. Your therapist can change your position, add or remove cushions, or move to a different area entirely. Nothing about the appointment is fixed.
