Deep Tissue Massage in Naples: What It Is For and What to Expect

Most people book a deep tissue massage because something specific has been bothering them for a while — a shoulder, a lower back, a hip that complains after a long drive. It is the most requested massage after Swedish, and the one most often booked with the wrong expectations.

What it actually involves

Slower and firmer than a relaxation massage, and far more focused. Rather than covering the whole body evenly, your therapist spends real time on a small number of areas, working at a depth you will notice. The pace is deliberate. There are pauses while they wait for something to release.

You will still be draped throughout and only the area being worked on is uncovered. The start of the appointment matters more here than in other treatments: tell your therapist exactly where the problem is, what makes it worse, and anywhere you would rather they left alone.

How much pressure is too much

The useful line is between pressure you are working with and pressure you are bracing against. The first is productive and often oddly satisfying. The second is not — you tense up, your therapist cannot get anywhere through a guarded muscle, and you leave sore for no good reason.

If you catch yourself holding your breath, say so. Asking for less is not a complaint and no therapist will take it as one. Asking for more is equally fine.

Who it suits

  • A persistent tight spot you have been stretching at without much success.
  • Desk work, long drives, or anything that keeps your shoulders forward all day.
  • Golf, tennis and pickleball, which in Naples means most people at some point.
  • Anyone who finds a lighter massage pleasant but not useful.

Who should book something else

  • If this is your first professional massage, start with Swedish. You will learn what you want from the hour.
  • If you are mainly after stress relief rather than a specific complaint, Swedish again.
  • If you want depth without firm pressure, Thermal Stone uses heat to do some of that work.
  • If you are pregnant, book Maternity Massage instead and speak to your physician first.

If you are managing a recent injury, a surgery you are still recovering from, or any medical condition, check with your physician before booking and tell your therapist when you arrive. We are a day spa, not a medical practice, and we will not advise you on whether massage is appropriate for a particular condition.

How long to book

Deep Tissue runs sixty minutes at $118, ninety at $168 or two hours at $228.

Ninety is the honest recommendation. An hour spent properly on one stubborn shoulder leaves very little time for the rest of you, and most people want the rest of them attended to as well. Book sixty if you want one area dealt with and nothing else.

Afterwards

Drink water, and expect to be slightly tender the next day in the way you are after unfamiliar exercise. Go easy on whatever caused the problem in the first place, at least for a day. If you have found something that works, book the next one before the tightness fully returns rather than after.

Common questions

Will it hurt?

It should be intense in places and not painful anywhere. Pain is the signal to speak up, not to endure.

How often should I come?

It depends entirely on what you are dealing with and what you do between visits. Your therapist will give you a straighter answer once they have felt what is going on.

Can I add anything to it?

Cupping at $30 is a common addition for an upper back that has gone stubborn, and CBD oil at $40 is popular with guests who book deeper pressure.

Is it the same price as Swedish?

Yes, at every length. Choose between them on what you want, not on cost — there is more on that in our Swedish versus deep tissue guide.
